Metacognitive Learning Activities

See ExpActGen for template activity description.

Metacognitive activities are about managing one's own learning. Students' readiness to undertake metacognitive learning activities depends on the degree of independence/autonomy that they have achieved. Initially, the tutor will carry out these activities for them. However, as students gain in skills and confidence, they can begin to carry them out for themselves. It's even possible for such metacognitive skills to become the subject of activity sequences in their own right.

The types of activity sequence that promote students' metacognitive learning include: link to exact sequences later

Planning

  • Deciding goals
  • Deciding tasks
  • Deciding 'success criteria': i.e. how the teacher and/or student can tell when an activity has been carried out successfully Relation to assessment criteria?
  • Finding (or knowing how to find) the equipment and resources needed, and managing them once they have been obtained.
  • If students are working in pairs or groups (i.e. collaboratively):
    • Allocating students to groups
    • Allocating roles within groups
