The + and - icons indicate where the component can be opened or closed so as to reveal other components. Here are snapshots of each main segment of the map, shown fully opened. We should aim to restrict the number of levels which users can (or are forced to) drill down, and so italicised expanded lists are meant to be displayed at the same time as their "parent" item.
